Centre for Research on Bilingualism in Theory & Practice
Bangor Bilingualism has joined Talkbank.
A research project led by Centre members has recently produced a significant online corpus of Welsh-English conversational data. The project is headed by Prof Margaret Deuchar, Director of the Centre, and funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council. It comprises over 40 hours of recorded casual conversations between 151 Welsh-English bilinguals of all ages from 10 to 89. The data have been transcribed using the CHAT system and are now available online at www.talkbank.org The transcribed data includes language tagging of all words and glossing and English translation of each utterance. The transcripts and sound files are all available to be downloaded from the Talkbank website. Research Associates Peredur Davies, Elen Robert and Jonathan Stammers were also involved in producing the corpus. The project researchers are confident that these data will prove invaluable for future research on bilingual communication in Wales, and indeed a number of academic papers which make use of data from the corpus are currently in press.
